OUR HISTORY
Lions Golden Jubilee Eye Hospital (LGJEH) was established in 2008 to commemorate Golden Jubilee Year of Lionism in Sri Lanka when the Governor of District 306B2 was Lion Mahesh Pasqual. Hospital operations was commenced next year in February 2009 when the district governor was Lion P. Jeyarajan with the purpose of carrying out cataract surgeries for needy patients.
A spectacle workshop was also initiated at the hospital with the assistance of an Australian NGO-International Centre for Eye care Education (ICEE). ICEE trained spectacle dispensers for the workshop and provided all necessary equipment so that the hospital could provide low cost spectacles to the needy. After three years ICEE handed over the workshop now it is called as “Brian Holden Vision Institute’’ to the LGJEH. It can now provide low cost spectacles as well as sophisticated spectacles for the affluent.
Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) was awarded a grant of USD 162,000 in April 2015 for capacity building and providing comprehensive eye care services to the needy. This project continues for 3 years and following state of the art machines were added to LGJEH in 2015: Yag Laser machine, Digital Fundus camera for Fundus photography and Fluororescein angiograms, Humphy Visual Field Analyzer to perform visual fields to detect Glaucoma, B scan and A scan machine for measurement of intraocular lens power for cataract surgeries, two slit lamps for eye examination and Auto Kerato Refractometer for corneal power measurements.
Currently the hospital has a total of 34 staff members including well trained optometrists and nursing staff. The kind and tenderly care of our staff coupled with the modern facilities the LGJEH has to offer contributes to comfortable treatment and speedy recovery of the needy patients who have suffered years with reversible blindness.

TRUSTEES CHAIRPERSON’S MESSAGE
I was fortunate to become the district governor in a milestone year when Lions Movement in Sri Lanka was celebrating 50 years and the Lions clubs International was led by our own Lion Leader Mahendra Amarasuriya. Therefore to mark this important occasion and to further our service to the needy as ‘Knights of the Blind’ Lions Golden Jubilee Eye Hospital (GJEH) was established in Kadawatha.
Over the years Lions Golden Jubilee Eye Hospital has grown in both quality and quantity adding state-of-the-art facilities with the sole purpose of giving best possible care to the patients in need. Since the establishment our hospital has carried out thousands of free surgeries and provided hundreds of spectacles to the patients who otherwise cannot afford such health care.
We are extremely grateful to the LCIF (Lions Clubs International Foundation) for the financial support and guidance given to us to improve our services to the community and wish to note the generous contributions from our lion leaders, lions and lion ladies of our own district 306B2.
On behalf of the Lions Golden Jubilee Eye Hospital Trust I earnestly appeal to kind benefactors to come forward in supporting us financially in our mission to eradicate reversible blindness in Sri Lanka.
I sincerely thank the management and staff for their commitment and dedication and all the trust members for their continuous support.
Each day is a worthwhile but strenuous journey as we strive to provide the gift of VISION for all those who seek it in Sri Lanka and it is your kind blessings that make it easier each year.
THANK YOU.
